REVEALED: The Conversation

Black men are far more likely than others to be diagnosed with severe mental health problems and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Evidence shows that Black men are far more likely than others to be diagnosed with severe mental health problems and sectioned under the Mental Health Act. However, up until 11 years old, Black boys don’t have poorer mental health than others of their age.

How do we explain this? Why is this happening?

There are multiple reasons… including stigma, cultural barriers, and systemic discrimination, all of which are more directly experienced by Black boys and young Black men as they get older. Exposure to trauma, whether through witnessing or direct victimization, is often a daily reality for many Black males.

The play, REVEALED, seeks to encourage more men to talk more about how they feel and increase the community and services’ understanding of how they can better support Black men who experience mental distress and trauma.

In addition to a conversation with the panel, the chair will invite a couple of questions from the audience.
