We’re delighted to welcome actor and writer Charlie to TFT with Jorvik, an exciting new piece of theatre rooted in history, storytelling and community. Ahead of the festival, we caught up with Charlie to hear about his creative journey, the inspiration behind his work, and what he’s looking forward to when he arrives in Bristol.
“Hello! I’m Charlie and I’m an actor and writer from Hull! I trained at Rose Bruford College and have been fortunate enough to work on some fantastic projects, such as Lenny Abrahamson’s new feature and The Psychic at York Theatre Royal!
I also make my own work, alongside good friend Oli Strong. Jorvik is the first play I have ever written and it has been a wild ride which keeps on going. Fingers crossed it’s the first of many!
I love storytelling because of its ability to transform. It’s a live, shared experience – something that feels increasingly rare in our world of screens. In my own practice, I aim to create a sense of communal storytelling: a connection between audience and performer, but also audience and audience. As a collective, we are doing this together, and that’s pretty cool. Like the skalds of old…
I can’t wait to come to TFT. The space looks so exciting to play in, and the pillars look particularly fun! I also can’t wait to finally visit Bristol.”
‘JORVIK’ is an interactive, immersive play – inspired by the Viking sagas and the great tradition of communal storytelling. Expect celebration, song, combat, larger than life characters and plenty of toasting! Fun, fierce and with a lot of heart. We are excited for this new piece of touring work to be enjoyed by audiences at TFT and look forward to see how Charlie and the team bring this unique piece of storytelling to life.
