    About

“Apollo’s angry, and the heavens themselves
Do strike at my injustice.” – Act III, scene 2

    Directed by Heidi Vaughan

    Edited by Robin Belfield

    Designed by Edwina Bridgeman

    Music by Ian Ross

Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is a story of jealousy, redemption, and the enduring power of love. Driven by unfounded jealousy, King Leontes accuses his wife Hermione of infidelity, triggering tragic consequences. Years later, through acts of forgiveness, reconciliation, and the miraculous power of time, a chance at renewal and hope emerges. This timeless tale moves seamlessly between tragedy and comedy, offering a rich exploration of human emotion and resilience.

The Winter’s Tale is a plea in favour of a second chance; the hope of repair – even when hope feels lost. This production celebrates the rhythm of the seasons, the passage of time, and the possibilities of new beginnings in a changed world.

Directed by Tobacco Factory Theatre’s Artistic Director, Heidi Vaughan, we are delighted to stage this rich and dynamic Shakespeare play, packed full of surprises, oracles, miracles and, of course, Shakespeare’s most famous and challenging stage direction.

WHAT THE PRESS SAY ABOUT PREVIOUS SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTIONS AT TFT:

    ★★★★

“A marvellous production of Othello – one of the best I have seen of this hard-to-love play – belongs to this theatre’s distinctive tradition. Spare but incisive. Cutting to the quick. It does not impose: it unlocks.”
    – The Guardian on Othello, 2017

    ★★★★

    “accessible, funny and delightfully acted”
    – Broadway World on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2019

    ★★★★

“Macbeth, with its use of violence as a political tool, is among the more receptive of Shakespeare`s plays to a modern overlay. Relocated to a 20th century battlefield, this dynamic production by Tobacco Factory Theatres… does this particularly imaginatively.”
    – The Stage on Macbeth, 2018
