    About

Working with an established playwright, Mike Akers, this session is an opportunity to learn about activities to engage people in writing.

You will be taken through different approaches to writing convincing characters, excellent dialogue and well-structured scenes along with practical ideas for how to teach this yourself.

This workshop will be held in our Meeting Room as a seminar style session.

Mike Akers is a playwright, dramaturg, theatre practitioner and teacher. Since writing his first play, Holding Hands With Angels for Theatre West, he has had more than thirty plays commissioned including productions for Bristol Old Vic, Salisbury Playhouse, Royal & Derngate Northampton, Tobacco Factory Theatres, Travelling Light, Polka Theatre, Green Ginger, Sixth Sense, The Wrong Crowd and on BBC radio.

He was Education Director at Travelling Light for seven years and has worked extensively in the education sector, running workshops and training in many different aspects of story making from Nursery School to University level and everything in between. He has devised and run courses on script writing for UWE and Bristol University and has acted as dramaturg on numerous pieces of new writing.

If you have anything specific that you would like to be covered, please email getinvolved@tobaccofactorytheatres.com so we have time to consider your request in advance.

Feedback from previous Facilitator Training sessions:

The session was practical and focused on getting me experiencing how I could use drama, rather than telling me what to do, it engaged me so that my own thoughts developed. Perfect!

Facilitator Training has equipped me to work with confidence and enjoyment in a variety of settings.

These little bite size courses are brilliant. Highly recommend to anyone in the arts who wants to broaden their perspectives.

I have taken away so many useful points from these workshops. They are definitely value for money.
