Artist Residencies

Artist Development is central to our mission to tell a wide range of stories and to support and nurture a creative community.

    What are the Residencies?

We regularly offer Bristol and South West-based artists one or two weeks of residency time in our Spielman Theatre to develop ideas for a brand new piece of work.

The focus of the residencies has been on the exploration and incubation of new ideas. There isn’t pressure for the artists to present something at the end of their residency, unless doing so will support their process.

    How to Apply

Applications have closed for our current set of artist residencies. Become an Artist Member for free and be the first to know when applications open.

When applications are open, we ask for a brief description of you, the work you’d like to do, the outcomes you hope to achieve and how you think working in our building will make a difference to you.

We also ask for a description of how you would tailor the residency. For example, do you need:

    • a quiet and focused thinking space
    • an active space to collaborate and test ideas
    • creative conversations with the producing team

    Selection Process

Our selection process reflects our artistic vision: to programme a range of styles, voices and stories that represent our diverse community. Additionally, we select artists/companies to whom we feel we can offer the best support.

    We make selections based on:

    • The work you do
    • What you would like to achieve
    • What barriers you face when trying to develop a new idea
    • How much impact we can have on your process
    • How in line your work is with our programme
