YOUNG PRODUCERS
A practical training programme in arts producing
Share your love and knowledge of theatre, music or art. Whatever you’re gaga about, our Young Producers programme will give you the opportunity to turn your passion into practice and make things happen.
Tobacco Factory Theatres Young Producers programme gives a group of 16 – 25 year olds the opportunity to spend a year learning from Tobacco Factory Theatres’s producing team as well as theatre and art buffs from across the city. If you’re part of the group, you will see shows, lots of shows! You’ll learn about event planning, marketing, budgeting, programming and theatre producing. You’ll pitch your favourite shows to the rest of the team before programming your choices and taking a lead in running your own festivals and events.
Tobacco Factory Theatres is looking for 10 people to be its next Young Producers. Join us on this journey and tell us what you really think about theatre, music and culture.
What you’ll gain from being a Young Producer
- An insight into organising events, ranging from debates and post show talks to festivals and DJ nights.
- Develop skills in a wide range of areas such as project management, producing, budgeting, marketing, tour booking, public speaking, performing, directing, writing, reviewing and more.
- Free tickets to arts events and shows.
- The chance to select and programme two theatre productions for Tobacco Factory Theatres, presented in the summer of 2019.
- Two arts award qualifications
- Connections with industry professionals across the city
- Written references and support with job applications.
Who can take part in Young Producers?
We want to strengthen our relationship with and improve opportunities for young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and those who live in certain areas of Bristol.
The Young Producers programme is therefore open to anyone aged 16 – 25 who lives in any area of Bristol and is from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background or anyone aged 16 – 25 from the following areas of Bristol:
- Hartcliffe
- Knowle
- Filwood
- Bishopsworth
- Bedminster Down
- Withywood
We want to hear from people with a wide range of interests – you don’t need any experience to apply. We just need people who are up for trying something new, for getting stuck in and for telling us what they really think. You might be a lover of music, street art, dancing, beatboxing, spoken word or politics. Perhaps you’ve never done any drama, or perhaps you are a performing artist. Either way, we want to hear from you!
What is the commitment?
Our Young Producers will work with us from September 2018 to July 2019 and attend weekly meetings on a Monday evening during school term time. They’ll go on at least three trips each term to theatre shows and arts events, as well as attend important events at Tobacco Factory Theatres, such as Press Nights and Season Launches. Over the duration of the year each member will also attend at least three regular one-to-one meetings with the programme leader. We ask that everyone commits to the entire length of the scheme and attends all the regular meetings.
Does it cost anything to be a Young Producer?
No! In fact, we recognise the commitment and contribution that our Young Producers make to the theatre and so we will pay you a small fee for each term that you fully attend. Tobacco Factory Theatres will cover the costs of the theatre trips and all other trips made by the group. Additional financial support is available for those who need it.

Applications received after 12 noon on Mon 25 June will not be considered.
Interviews will take place in the week beginning Mon 09 July 2018.
