Rehearsals for Così fan tutte are almost wrapped up, as we prepare to open this week! As ever with Mozart, the deeper we go, the more intricate and witty it becomes. This opera is so often described as light or playful, but beneath the comedy lies a structure of extraordinary precision — which is exactly what makes it such a joy to direct.
Working with Jonathan Lyness, our Music Director, is a reminder of what makes an Opera Project production, co-produced with Tobacco Factory Theatres, quite so special. Jonathan has conducted more than 90 productions, including last year’s Marriage of Figaro at Tobacco Factory Theatres, and his ability to bring clarity and pace to an ensemble is second to none. In the rehearsal room, his work with the singers ensures that Mozart’s wit and sparkle land with both musical precision and warmth.
This year’s cast bring an exceptional breadth of experience. Galina Averina, who sang the Countess in last year’s Figaro, now brings her remarkable vocal control to Fiordiligi. Robyn Lyn Evans adds lyric beauty to Ferrando, while Melissa Gregory (recently at La Scala and returning to Glyndebourne) brings Dorabella’s energy to life. With Samuel Pantcheff, Lorena Paz Nieto, and Philip Smith rounding out the company, we are blessed with a line-up that combines international calibre with a real feel for our intimate space.
One of the pleasures of making an opera for Tobacco Factory Theatres is the closeness between stage and audience. When we reach the terzetto Soave sia il vento, often described as one of Mozart’s most moving musical moments, that intimacy makes the balance of voices and ensemble feel almost suspended in the air, creating a moment of stillness before the comedy spirals again.
For those who joined us for The Marriage of Figaro last year, this production is the second part of Mozart and Da Ponte’s trilogy. Even for seasoned opera-goers who know Così well, this staging will offer something fresh: a production that combines wit, truth, and a stunning performance where the action is just a few feet away.
I so look forward to sharing the results of our work with you, so very soon!
