Building work begins on a series of large red-brick factories in South Bristol, designed by architect Sir Frank Wills, a member of the Wills Tobacco dynasty. The huge factories originally stretch all the way down Raleigh Road, covering over 1 million sq ft. At their peak, over 40% of the working population of Southville, Bedminster and Ashton work in these buildings.
